The Operating Room Technician performs the scrubbing duties for operative procedures and assists the surgeon and Registered Nurse circulator as directed. The Operating Room Technician is responsible to the unit supervisor for assigned operating room.

• High school diploma or GED equivalency
• Graduation from an accredited surgical technician training program or an equivalent training program (i.e. military, hospital etc) is recommended.
• BCLS certification
• Evidence of 2 years of current operating room scrub experience
• Knowledge of surgical instruments, suture material, power and specialty equipment, drug and supply terminology
• Able to perform the capabilities of the job (see attached)

• Correctly identifies surgical instruments, their care, storage and sterilization.
• Keeps informed of changes in practice and attends in-services when offered.
• Maintains and controls all surgical equipment and supplies, checks for expiration dates on trays, supplies and equipment.
• Gathers appropriate equipment, supplies and instruments, checks equipment for safety and opens sterile supplies with proper technique.
• Assists in the preparation of the operative site and assists with the proper and safe positioning of the patient on the operating room table.
• Assists the surgical team with the donning of surgical gowns, self gowns, set up of sterile field, assists with draping the patient and accounts for all surgical items used on the sterile field.
• Passes instruments, sutures and supplies to the operative team for all surgical specialties.
• Safely breaks down the contaminated set up after completion of the case in a manner that prevents the spread of contamination.
• Safely operates steam autoclaves, mechanical and electrical equipment.
• Assists in the transport of the patient both to and from the Operating Room.
• The technician may not provide patient services that require the skill of a licensed nurse.
